Methodology: how we verify facts

Every number on this site should be traceable to a primary source in two clicks. Here's the pipeline.

Settlements and refunds

Candidates come from court filings, agency announcements, and administrator sites.
Before an entry is published, we verify the claim deadline, payout structure, proof requirements, and official claim URL on the court-appointed administrator's website (Epiq, Kroll, JND, Angeion, A.B. Data, and peers) or the agency's own pages (ftc.gov, state attorney general sites).
Each entry displays a last verified date and its complete source list. If we can't verify a fact on an official source, we don't publish it.

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation publishes a monthly Pending-MDLs report as PDF. We parse each report — including archived reports back to 2014 — into a structured time series of (report month × MDL).
"Off the roster" means an MDL stopped appearing in the panel's monthly report; it usually indicates resolution or closure, and we label it as our derivation, not a court statement.
Parsing is automated with layout-aware parsers and validated by tests; a handful of archived reports (broken PDF fonts) are excluded rather than guessed at.
